Brunswick’s BI-DesignLab (BIDL), a member of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Research Park is seeking a Data Science intern. The intern will work closely with the digital products team from Mercury Marine, a division of Brunswick, to extract business insights and strategies from data. This data will be used in product planning, market analysis, business case development, product line management, and new product development activities.
Job Responsibility:
Collect, clean, and process data from connected vessels, IoT devices, and cloud platforms
Explore telemetry, usage, and sensor datasets to identify patterns, trends, and insights that improve user experience and product performance
Build analytical models or lightweight machine learning prototypes that support predictive insights, diagnostics, or product recommendations
Partner with digital products and engineering teams to translate problem statements into concrete analytical tasks
Assist with developing or refining model pipelines, ensuring data quality and integrity throughout
Create visualizations, dashboards, or reporting flows that communicate insights clearly to non-technical stakeholders
Document data sources, modeling assumptions, and analytical approaches
Support ongoing connectivity initiatives by analyzing system interactions, device behavior, and user telemetry as referenced in connectivity strategy materials
Requirements:
Permanent US Work authorization
Current enrollment in a BS in a field related to Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
Demonstratable experience with Python for data analysis (pandas, NumPy, scikitlearn)
Familiarity with exploratory data analysis, statistical methods, and data visualization
Ability to work with unstructured or imperfect realworld datasets
Strong communication skills—able to translate analytical findings into actionable insights
Nice to have:
Experience with cloud analytics environments (Azure, AWS, or GCP)
Exposure to IoT or connectivity data flows
Knowledge of machinelearning model development or MLOps tools
Experience with dashboards (Power BI, Tableau) or visualization libraries
Interest in connected products, digital ecosystems, or recreational technology markets
