Wētā FX is a leader in creativity and innovation in visual effects and animation. We’re now looking for an industrial and/or mechanical electrician who is keen to step into the film and VFX industry. This role works at the heart of our technical operations, supporting one of the most advanced data centre environments in the Southern Hemisphere. Our new Extreme Density (XD) room is the first private Direct‑to‑Chip Liquid Cooling data centre of its kind in this part of the world. This is the infrastructure that powers our high‑end rendering for projects like Avatar, and you’ll be directly involved in maintaining and supporting it. In this role, you will oversee the data centre's electrical infrastructure and plant equipment, as well as the day‑to‑day performance of Wētā FX’s data centres and the wider electrical needs across our facilities.
Job Responsibility:
Monitoring facility performance through SCADA and other systems, responding to issues, and conducting regular checks to ensure everything is functioning as expected
Develop and follow maintenance plans for all critical systems to minimise downtime and ensure operational efficiency. You will also be expected to provide rostered on-call coverage for urgent issues that arise outside of regular business hours, ensuring quick response times to any incidents
Manage relationships with external suppliers and contractors ensuring that any work done within the data centre and wider facilities is performed to a high standard and with minimal impact on operations
Lead on various projects, from infrastructure upgrades to service improvements
Maintaining the security of the data centres is a critical responsibility. You will manage access controls, surveillance, and environmental monitoring systems to ensure that the facilities remain secure and that risks are identified and addressed promptly
Be responsible for ensuring compliance with all health and safety regulations and policies, contributing to hazard management processes, and reporting any incidents or near-misses.
Requirements:
A strong technical background in electrical and/or mechanical plant operations
Electrical or mechanical certifications, with a valid NZ electrical practising license
Experience with SCADA/BMS monitoring and ideally have data centre infrastructure operations
Proven ability to develop and implement operating procedures
Strong problem-solving skills and able to troubleshoot complex technical issues while managing multiple tasks and projects
Strong communication skills are also important, as you will be liaising with various teams across the business and with external stakeholders
Given the unique environment of this roll a willingness to learn and upskill will be critical.
