Requirements

After Sept 1, 1992: Opt 1: Bachelor degree in Cytology OR Opt 2: Bachelor degree in related science and 12 month in accredited Cytology program
Before Sept 1, 1992: Opt 1: completed 2 years in an accredited institution and have 1 year training in an approved school of cytotechnology
Opt 2: 6 months formal training in an approved school and 6 months full-time experience
After Sept 1, 1992: Cytologist with American Society for Clinical Pathology (CT-ASCP)
Before Sept 1, 1992: Cytologist with American Society for Clinical Pathology (CT-ASCP) is preferred but not required
Must be able to prioritize and organize assignments effectively
Must possess a high level of independence in their work
Must have a full understanding of laboratory technique and specialized methods

Job Responsibility

Perform accurate microscopic screening and interpretation of gynecological and non-gynecological specimens so pathologists and clinicians can detect and identify cancerous and precancerous cellular changes, leading to optimal patient care and timely intervention
Meticulously evaluate gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology specimens, using expertise to detect, differentiate, and interpret the presence or absence of disease
Diagnose negative gynecologic Pap cases, perform rapid on-site evaluations for fine needle aspirations, and resolve technical issues and discrepancies while maintaining absolute integrity in reporting results and ensuring compliance with all high-complexity testing requirements (CLIA and CAP)

ASCP Cytotechnologist (CT) Certification is required
Florida Cytotechnologist license is required
Prior experience working in Cytology is preferred
ThinPrep and SurePath certifications is a plus
Must pass slide screening requirements and annual CAP proficiency test
Demonstrated understanding of Cyto preparation techniques
Automated and non-automated testing experience is preferred

Job Responsibility

Screen and evaluate any gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens sent to the laboratory for the determination of possible malignant or related abnormal conditions
Screening of all liquid based cytology, both manual and imaged, as well as conventional slides

Ensure proper documentation of workload recording, including screening and non-screening activities as required by CLIA and laboratory guidelines
Maintain absolute integrity in the accurate performance and reporting of results

Job Responsibility

Uses independent judgment and cognitive skills to develop interpretations to be used by the physician in determining the presence of disease and/or an infectious process
Demonstrates working and theoretical knowledge of diagnostic principles and interpretation of gynecologic and non-gynecologic evaluations and consistent screening productivity
Evaluates patient samples to determine the absence or presence of malignant and pre-malignant changes, infectious and inflammatory processes
Identifies and provides accurate diagnoses within the department guidelines
Ascertains specimens are properly identified, labeled, data entered and suitable for testing
Identifies and corrects, as needed, patient demographics, clinical history, specimen identification and billing errors
Ensures reports are precise, accurate and timely according to the quality assurance program
Assists and prepares cytology slides from fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures using the proper technique
May perform, evaluate and monitor quality control and quality assurance for cytology, immunohistochemistry, and molecular testing, noting trends and identifying issues
