Job Responsibility:

  • Cytopreparatory Technician prepares Cytology specimens for evaluation
  • Technician is responsible for accessioning and troubleshooting select Cytology specimens
  • Technicians are responsible maintaining laboratory conditions, quality assurance practice and instrument maintenance in accordance with laboratory policies
  • Prepares GYN specimens utilizing Hologic ThinPrep processors
  • Utilizes automated slide stainer and coverslipper
  • Facilitates Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) testing, performed by Virology
  • Performs preventive maintenance of instrumentation as required for efficient operation
  • Accessions and triages non-GYN specimens to determine appropriate method of preparation
  • Prepares cell blocks and special stains slides as necessary
  • Monitors and orders Laboratory supplies as needed
  • Follows universal health and safety precautions
  • Prepares additional specimens and re-preps for studies, projects, and teaching materials
  • Maintains automated and manual stain setups
  • Manages incoming specimens and collaborates with other departments to retrieve additional specimen
  • Maintains Quality Assurance standards
  • Facilitates additional diagnostic testing of Cytology specimens
  • Performs annual physical inventory counts of supplies and reagents as required by Laboratory Administration
  • Manages storage of residual specimens and discards appropriately

Requirements:

  • Associate's degree in Medical Technology required
  • Associate's degree in a natural science, or a clinical laboratory science and coursework acceptable to NYSED required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Clinical Laboratory Technician NYS licensure upon hire required
