The Custodian maintains a clean, safe, and secure school environment. This position performs daily custodial services, including restroom cleaning and restocking, trash removal, cafeteria setup and breakdown, and routine building and grounds inspections. The Custodian responds to staff and administrator requests, supports deliveries and event setups, performs minor repairs, and assists with seasonal, project-based, and deep-cleaning work. This role monitors building systems, reports maintenance and safety issues, supports security procedures, and serves as essential personnel during emergencies, closures, or crisis events, working collaboratively with school staff to support safe and effective school operations.
Job Responsibility:
Clean areas of the building such as classrooms, offices, student and staff bathrooms, stairwells, cafeteria, hallways, library, etc., using proper cleaning practices and procedures and using custodial equipment in a safe and efficient manner
Remove trash from the building and from outside trash containers and place into the dumpster
Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication with the principal, teaching staff, custodial staff, and community members
Write and respond to emails from the principal and head custodian, and complete required annual online training courses
Assist in set-ups and breakdowns for events and meetings
Locking/unlocking areas for access, and providing customer support
Communicate maintenance and safety concerns, as well as custodial supply and equipment needs, to the head custodian or lead custodian
Monitor building lighting, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems (e.g., unit ventilators)

and coordinate reporting of repair needs
Perform Integrated Pest Management (IPM) activities in accordance with established procedures
Secure the building
Lock classroom and office doors, close windows and turn off lights
Check and lock exterior doors by walking the perimeter of the building and set security alarm
Perform seasonal and project-based facility work, including snow and ice removal in areas not accessible by plows
mowing and grounds maintenance in areas not accessible by ride-on equipment

and participation in assigned summer, seasonal, and deep-cleaning projects
Respond as essential personnel during emergencies, weather or environmental events, and school, facility, or district closures, and participate in the school’s crisis management plan as directed by the principal or incident commander

Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Complete and submitted BVSD online application
Communicate (read, write, and speak) in English, must pass English component of interview process
Ability to be on feet up to eight hours every day
Ability to perform physical labor, including heavy lifting of up to 50 pounds
occasional dual lifts of up to 100 pounds and requires ability to frequently reach, lift, bend and stoop
may occasionally require climbing ladders or crawling
Must pass pre-employment background screenings
Must pass post offer physical.
