The CSJ Educational Assistant will be responsible for planning, organizing and hosting events and activities relating to the Urban Farm, along with selling produce items at the Farmers’ Markets. In addition, the position will require the incumbent to maintain and update the online order website for taking orders for produce. The position will assist with crop production for a wide variety of crops grown in field conditions and in unheated greenhouse settings. The work varies from week to week and will be physically demanding. A combination of walking, bending, standing for long periods of time, lifting, and repetitive activities will be required.
Job Responsibility:
Coordinating and hosting the sales booth at the local Farmer’s Market each Saturday, and at other events
Managing and updating produce stock and volume listings on the online order page
Planning, coordinating and hosting family-friendly events such as Seedling Sales, U-Pick Harvest Events, Seniors Tea, and workshops throughout the summer
Partnering with internal and external programs, including community organizations, delivering on-site tours, community awareness sessions and initiating garden-related activities for adults, youth, and school-aged children
Assisting with education programs for residents and school children in the Abbotsford and Mission areas
Representing Archway Urban Farm at community education events such as Earth Day and Berry Fest
Assisting with the overall crop production using sustainable methods that protect the environment and the crops including seeding, preparing beds, composting, transplanting, weeding, integrating pest management, harvesting and preparing of produce for market
Assisting with increasing sustainable soil system working toward ‘no till’ goals to help mitigate carbon into climate and increase microbial health in soil
Assisting with indoor vertical farm, maintaining and monitoring crops and technology in a controlled agriculture environment
Assisting in trials and experiments using innovation to increase sustainable environment protections practices and organic methods (e.g. Dry Farming)
Managing the watering schedule for crops for both the field and greenhouses, including monitoring soil moisture as per crop requirements
Requirements:
Must be between the ages of 16 and 30, at the time of their start of employment at Archway
Must be a Canadian citizen, immigrant with permanent residency status, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and varying levels of English
Strong organizational and time management skills
able to balance and manage competing projects and priorities
Your own transportation to commute to work and to Farmers’ Markets and other events
Ability to use mowers, trimming and pruning equipment
Willingness to learn Archway’s various policies and procedures
Ability to effectively interact in a diplomatic, collaborative, professional and results oriented manner
Ability for direct, in-person contact with on-site staff and clients
adherence to health and safety protocols is required
Ability to work as part of a team
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
Ability to manage physical labor-intensive tasks related to garden maintenance and crop production, including walking, repetitive motions, bending, lifting, and long periods of standing
Ability to work outdoors
must be able to work in inclement weather
Eligibility to meet Canada Summer Jobs requirements of being between 16 to 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period
