Job Description

Our role is to protect the public and maintain confidence in the nursing and midwifery professions. As the largest independent regulator in Europe of more than 860,000 nursing and midwifery professionals, we have a crucial role in making this a reality. We do this by setting and promoting high education and professional standards for all future and registered nurses and midwives in the UK and nursing associates in England. We also ensure every nurse, midwife and nursing associate on our Register meets clear standards of conduct and practice which protects the public and the reputation of our professions. We have a duty to investigate concerns and to take steps to protect the public in the relatively rare instances where we need to limit or restrict a nurse, midwife or nursing associate’s right to practise. Job Responsibility

  • Review and prepare fitness to practise cases for our practice committees
  • Prepare applications to be heard in the High Court
  • Present hearings regularly before the NMC’s practice committees
  • Appear regularly in the County Court and High Court or Court of Session
  • Deliver high quality adjudication outcomes for registrants in a person-centred way

Requirements

  • Holder of a UK Practising Certificate as UK Qualified Solicitor or Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive
  • Experience of advocacy
  • Proven experience of providing consistently accurate and appropriate legal advice while meeting tight deadlines
  • Experience of autonomous decision making while dealing with high profile, sensitive issues
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills
  • Collaborative working with other internal teams
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to work on a range of different matters and cases simultaneously
  • Good IT skills
  • Person-centred approach to daily work, including showing respect to all, listening and sensitively managing individuals with additional needs
  • Strong commitment to and understanding of the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion within the environment that the NMC operates
