Job Description:

The Transition & Intervention Counselor is crucial in attracting talented students to Eastern Kentucky University and representing the unique offerings of specific colleges. Leveraging technology, relationship-building skills, and a deep knowledge of the assigned college, the counselor will engage with prospective students and families, high schools and community organizations to foster strong affinity and excitement about our academic programs. Once students are on campus and in classes, the Counselor provides direct, proactive, and responsive support to students experiencing academic, personal, or financial challenges that may impact their ability to persist at EKU. This position serves as a key intervention specialist, working closely with faculty, academic advisors, financial aid, counseling services, and student affairs to assist students in overcoming barriers to success. By utilizing the CRM (Slate), data and current trends, early alert systems, outreach strategies, and one-on-one coaching, the Transition & Intervention Counselor helps students navigate critical transitions (first-year, transfer, and re-enrollment) through the recruitment and enrollment cycles and provides targeted intervention efforts when students are at risk of disengaging or stopping out.

Job Responsibility:

  • Utilize Slate CRM to manage and track the recruitment process efficiently
  • Analyze data and metrics to identify trends, challenges, and opportunities to enhance recruitment strategies
  • Utilize various digital platforms to connect with prospective students
  • Provides one-on-one counseling and coaching for students facing academic, financial, or personal difficulties
  • Develops individualized intervention plans to help students overcome obstacles and persist in their academic journey
  • Serves as the primary contact for students flagged through early alert systems
  • Assists students with navigating university policies, academic resources, and financial aid options
  • Travel to college fairs, recruitment events, high schools, etc.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with prospective students, families, and high schools
  • Host engaging virtual and in-person events
  • Collaborate with developing and maintaining strong relationships with college deans, departments and faculty
  • Tailor one-on-one counseling sessions to address individual academic and career aspirations
  • Assist the Dual Credit team in creating classroom presentations
  • Works with first-year, transfer, and returning students to ensure a smooth transition to EKU
  • Provides structured coaching sessions, workshops, and engagement programming
  • Collaborates with faculty and student success teams to identify at-risk students early and implement intervention strategies
  • Coordinates intervention plans with academic advising, mental health services, financial aid, and tutoring
  • May collaborate with college leadership to provide summer camp opportunities to high school students
  • Hire and train student ambassadors
  • Works closely with the Senior Director of Enrollment & Intervention to track student progress, report intervention outcomes, and refine support strategies
  • Maintains accurate case notes and documentation
  • Assist in the development of college-specific orientation programming
  • Collaborate with academic advisors to address program-specific questions
  • Conduct timely intervention outreach to students on academic probation, those with financial holds, and students identified as high-risk for attrition
  • Develops communication strategies to connect with disengaged students and encourage re-engagement
  • Assists in the design and implementation of persistence initiatives
  • Completes other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Higher Education, or a related field
  • Minimum two years of experience in recruitment, student success coaching, counseling, crisis intervention, or academic support services
  • Experience working with at-risk student populations, retention initiatives, or case management preferred
  • Strong understanding of data-informed recruitment, student development, academic advising, and persistence strategies
  • Occasional travel and evening/weekend work may be required for recruitment and engagement events

Nice to have:

Master’s degree preferred in Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Social Work, or Student Affairs
