Job Description

Robert Half is seeking a detail-oriented Cost Accountant for our client in the nonprofit industry in San Diego, CA. This role is ideal for an accounting professional with experience in cost analysis, budget tracking, grant or program expense allocation, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate is analytical, organized, and committed to supporting a mission-driven organization through accurate and timely financial insight.

Job Responsibility

  • Analyze program, departmental, and operational costs to support budgeting and financial planning
  • Monitor expense allocations and help ensure costs are recorded accurately across funds, programs, or departments
  • Prepare and maintain cost reports, reconciliations, and supporting schedules
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities related to cost accounting
  • Track direct and indirect expenses and support allocation methodologies
  • Partner with finance and program teams to review spending trends and identify variances
  • Support grant reporting, audit preparation, and documentation requests as needed
  • Maintain accurate general ledger records related to cost accounting activities
  • Help ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting policies, and reporting requirements
  • Identify opportunities to improve reporting processes and financial visibility

Requirements

  • 3+ years of accounting experience, including cost accounting or financial analysis
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field preferred
  • Strong knowledge of cost accounting principles, reconciliations, budgeting, and financial reporting
  • Experience with month-end close, journal entries, and account analysis
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting software
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines

Nice to have

  • Experience with systems such as Microsoft D365, Oracle NetSuite, QuickBooks, SAP, Workday, or similar platforms
  • Familiarity with accounting controls and software proficiency aligned with current hiring needs

  • Analyze production order variances, investigate exceptions, and complete required labor confirmations to support accurate cost reporting
  • Oversee service order costing by monitoring job activity, partnering with business unit leaders to close completed work, and ensuring invoices are issued in line with customer purchase orders and revenue recognition guidelines
  • Create and post journal entries for payroll adjustments, reporting corrections, card reclassifications, and other accounting needs while reallocating costs to the correct business areas and general ledger accounts
  • Monitor inventory-related activity by reviewing open orders and coordinating with supply chain and production teams on timing and order completion
  • Reconcile unbilled items, aging order reports, disassembly invoicing, and rework order activity, comparing actual labor and material usage against planned amounts and driving timely closure with department supervisors
  • Support capital asset accounting through annual fixed asset audits, asset request tracking, capitalization review, and regular reporting on open capital requests
  • Conduct weekly cycle count audits and communicate findings, discrepancies, and trends to management for follow-up action
