Job Description:

Allen Lane are supporting a legal Regulator on their recruitment for a Corporate Governance Lead to join their team. The Corporate Governance Lead is at the heart of their organisation. Working under the supervision of the Director, Corporate Services, you will be responsible for making sure that robust and proportionate corporate governance processes are implemented and adhered to, which support delivery of our demanding work programme. This is an initial 6-month fixed term contract that has potential to go permanent.

Job Responsibility:

  • Providing board secretariat functions including: working to the Director, Corporate Services and with the Chair and Chief Executive to coordinate Board meetings (including preparing agendas and accurate minutes, following up action points, and making sure meetings run in accordance with prevailing rules of procedure)
  • Managing the corporate office including coordinating communications with Board members between meetings and being the primary point of contact for Board members in terms of registers of interests and hospitality, remuneration and expenses, invitations and correspondence and IT support
  • Maintaining the Governance Manual including developing governance policy proposals and advising the Chair, Board, Committees and colleagues of their responsibilities
  • Ensuring Board members receive adequate training, development and briefing to enable them to fulfil their responsibilities
  • Overseeing arrangements for annual Board member evaluation and reviews
  • Coordinating Senior Leadership Team meetings (including preparing agendas, minutes, follow up actions)
  • Proactively identifying new developments in best practice particularly in relation to Non-Departmental Public Bodies
  • Managing aspects of the governance relationship with the OLC in line with our statutory responsibilities under the Legal Services Act 2007
  • Providing expert advice and guidance on: all aspects of information management including GDPR, information assurance and freedom of information
  • aspects of corporate governance eg Bribery Act and whistleblowing
  • Line management of two Corporate Support Officers

Requirements:

  • Excellent understanding of requirements and best practice in public sector corporate governance, ideally gained in a lead governance role in an NDPB, regulatory or other statutory environment
  • Experience of board and committee secretariat duties, including, accurate and timely minute-taking
  • Strong understanding of principles of information assurance and data protection and their practical application, including advising colleagues on appropriate procedures
  • Experience of supporting non-executive appointments – highly desirable
  • ICSA qualification/membership or working towards qualification – highly desirable
