Job Description:

The goal of the Corporate Development team is to accelerate Shopify’s mission to make commerce better for everyone through strategic acquisitions and alliances. We take a product-first lens with our approach to external opportunities. To tackle this, we’re building a multidisciplinary team with folks who bring experience in product, technology, talent, partnerships, and corporate development. We’re looking for a Corporate Development Associate who has passion for entrepreneurship, startups, technology and products. Working alongside Shopify’s leadership and executive teams, the Corporate Development Associate is responsible for identifying disruptive commerce and technology products experiences and accelerating Shopify's roadmap through acquisitions and alliances. We’re searching for someone who has the skill, curiosity and rigor required to drive new opportunity identification, evaluation, and execution. This person must also be highly organized and be able to prioritize and balance work on various initiatives simultaneously. We care about our work, but we also care about each other and having a positive work environment. In this role, you need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable, able to work with many different types of personalities, to really connect with people (particularly entrepreneurs and founders), and know how to work as a team player.

Job Responsibility:

  • Conduct due diligence and create all necessary materials/memos for acquisition consideration, for review by leadership and executive teams
  • Execute business analysis to support business cases and inform deal structures/negotiations
  • Drive projects forward by collaborating with internal stakeholders, developing recommendations and output materials, and presenting key deliverables
  • Provide transaction support including negotiating with external parties, project management, and integration planning
  • Build context through deep understanding of Shopify’s product roadmap. You’ll use this context to identify risks and opportunities to Shopify, and to facilitate executive decision making on strategic options
  • Meet with startups/ early stage companies, evaluate new products & technologies, and map new markets & ecosystems

Requirements:

  • Experience working on investments or acquisitions. From the ideation phase through close, including researching, sourcing, diligence, and integration
  • Experience in the tech industry. Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in corporate development, investment banking, private equity, or consulting. Additional operational or technical experience (e.g., product management or engineering) is a plus
  • Extensive modeling skills. You are proficient at building complex operating and financial models that help people understand value exchange, risks, and tradeoffs
  • A highly analytical mindset. You have an ability to work with tremendous amounts of information/data and can extract meaning from the data
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. You’re comfortable drafting documents, creating impactful decks, and delivering presentations using business acumen, creativity and collegiality to key stakeholders (internally and externally)
  • Great relationship building skills. You are a team player with a track record of building trust quickly with peers and seniors, and are confident in bringing together stakeholders to work through a problem
  • Genuine excitement for tech and entrepreneurship. You are a constant learner and actively seek to keep yourself up to date on developments in product and technology
  • AI Native. You are very proficient with AI tools and integrate them into your everyday workflow to improve your efficiency and output
