The Cook is primarily responsible for preparing and serving students healthy, fresh, and well-balanced meals. This position will ensure consistent food preparation along with proper storage and retention of food in accordance with appropriate guidelines. An essential aspect of the Cook’s responsibilities is maintaining a healthy and safe kitchen by ensuring compliance with governmental, legislative, and other guidelines.
Job Responsibility:
Prepare and serve healthy, fresh, and well-balanced meals in compliance with MESC’s health and nutritional plan
Ensure and provide consistent food preparation and the highest calibre of food presentation
Follow the menu as written by the Director of Food Services
Seek approval from the Director of Food Services if changes to the menu are needed
Ensure food is stored in appropriate containers, labeled, and rotated to ensure high standards of freshness, minimize waste, and maximize quality
Maintain daily production records, temperature logs, and other spreadsheets
Uphold standards of practice in inventory procedures
Ensure refrigerators and storerooms are organized and maintained in the various kitchen areas on a daily basis and that all food products are stored in accordance with provincial regulations
Ensure compliance with local health department food service regulations
Maintain safe food handling procedures
Ensure cleanliness and hygiene is maintained in the various kitchen areas, including refrigerators and storerooms, and that food products are rotated to ensure high standards of freshness
Strive to uphold a safe working environment, healthy and safety conscious, and actively involved in maintaining and improving a safe work environment
Practice proper grooming, personal hygiene, and uniform standards
Complete assigned side duties and work duties within a timely manner, meeting required deadlines
Assist with special events as directed by the Director of Food Services
Requirements:
Professional certificates in food services required
Minimum of one (1) year of cooking experience required
Ability to compute basic mathematical calculations
Knowledge of proper sanitation procedures and food safe guidelines
Understanding of food handling and sanitation standards
Understanding of school cafeteria operational procedures
Effective decision making skills
Positive communication and interpersonal skills
Positive attitude and a consistent display of professionalism
Innovative, detail-oriented, and quality conscious
Ability to exert physical effort in transporting equipment and wares
