The Controls Engineer is responsible for the repair, maintenance, and commissioning of electrical and electronic systems within the marine propulsion industry. This role supports equipment from leading manufacturers including ZF, Schottel, Rolls-Royce, Aquamaster, Steerprop, Ulstein, and Brunvoll.
Job Responsibility:
Perform high-quality repairs, commissioning, and installation of marine electrical and electronic systems
Diagnose and troubleshoot issues on marine propulsion equipment
Travel to job sites as required to carry out service and repair work
Complete service reports and documentation as required
Participate in after-hours and emergency call-outs
Conduct sea trials and deliver high levels of customer support
Provide hands-on support for installation, testing, and commissioning of motor starters, electrical systems, PTO hydraulic systems, lubrication pumps, and ABB equipment
Install wiring and cabling in accordance with OEM specifications
Utilize specialized diagnostic tools to test and analyze marine electronic systems
Collect parts and materials from suppliers as needed
Support emergency response procedures, including hurricane preparation when required
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
Requirements:
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, safety procedures, and engineering documentation
Strong written communication skills for reporting and documentation
Basic mathematical skills, including measurements and calculations
Ability to follow instructions in written, verbal, or diagram form and solve practical problems in structured environments
Advanced electrical and troubleshooting experience
Valid driver’s license and TWIC card required (passport preferred)
High school diploma or equivalent required
or a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience
OEM training and/or hands-on experience preferred
Willingness and ability to complete international ZF product training as required
Regular use of hands for handling tools and equipment
Frequent standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching
Ability to lift up to 25 lbs regularly, 50 lbs frequently, and up to 100 lbs occasionally
Work requires good vision (close, distance, depth perception, and focus adjustment)
Must be able to work in varying conditions, including day/night shifts, adverse weather, and environments involving water and electrical systems
