The Controls Engineer IV develops the electrical design for automated equipment according to a customer and internal specification; develops and programs automated equipment hardware and software according to customer and internal specifications; capable of being the Controls Engineering Lead on any size machine or replication project, including large, multi-module systems.
Job Responsibility:
Lead the development of controls architecture for multiple module systems and the engineering team
Program control and vision systems for cam, servo, and air operated stations, along with test and electrical devices
Ensure the electrical design and software architecture is functional, robust, and cost effective
Innovate and use good judgment to incorporate ATS Life Sciences Chicago standards and regulatory requirements
Research and specify appropriate purchased and preferred components
Create electrical wiring schematics, flow diagrams, panel layouts, bill of materials, organize release packages and update schematics
Participate in internal and customer design reviews, installations and service calls when needed
Guide Electricians in wiring and codes. Support software validation requirements
Work with suppliers to find/develop the most functional and economical solutions to design issues
Participate in the Project Execution Plan meeting, developing the controls engineering execution plan. Work under the confines of the execution plan schedule and budget
PLC’sroblem-solve with Mechanical Builders and Electricians, debug hardware and software issues, and update all appropriate documentation
Communicate ideas and comprehend information both verbally and in written form
Work closely with Mechanical Engineering and Assembly and exhibit objectivity and openness to others’ views
Help guide and mentor Level I and Level II Controls Engineers with the execution of their projects
Contribute to the development and maintenance of ATS Life Science Chicago internal and international standards
Set and maintain departmental goals in keeping with company objectives
Support and participate in quality management program
Provide necessary documentation and support for machinery operating manuals
Make recommendations for quality and cost improvements
Keeps abreast of current product developments
Domestic or International travel or extended workday if required
Adhere to International Standardization Organization (ISO) standards
Prioritize, plan and organize work and workspace
Comply with all ATS company policies

Requirements:
College degree in electrical engineering, engineering related field or equivalent experience
Six (6+) or more years of automation experience
Proficiency in Allen Bradley PLC’s, HMI’s, Servo control, electrical design and machine vision systems (Cognex or Keyence)
Average skill level as defined by the Controls Engineering Skills Matrix: - Any one of the following: Hardware – 8, Software – 7, Vision – 8 - OR any two of the following: Hardware – 6, Software – 4, Vision – 6
Proficient with computers, including programs such as ePlan, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Microsoft Office suite, etc.
Can operate fax machine, copiers, and printers/plotters, etc.
Proficient with inspection and measuring tools such as scales, calipers, micrometers, multi-meters, dB meters, etc.
Travel 25% to 30%
The employee may be required to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor
Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or exert up to 10 pounds of force frequently
Visual Acuity – Normal requirements for reading written instructions and computer screens
Hearing Ability – Normal requirements for understanding verbal instructions
Working Conditions – The employee is subject to a normal office environment with occasional exposure to high noise levels and/or physical hazards when visiting the manufacturing floor
