We are looking for an experienced Controller to provide hands-on leadership across accounting operations for a higher education institution in Indiana. This Long-term Contract position will oversee core financial activities, guide a small team, and work closely with internal departments and external partners to maintain accurate reporting and strong compliance practices. The role is well suited for an experienced accounting specialist who brings sound judgment, operational depth, and a collaborative approach within a mission-focused environment.
Job Responsibility:
Lead day-to-day accounting activities, including oversight of the general ledger, financial reporting support, and accuracy of core accounting records
Direct and mentor staff responsible for payroll and student accounts while fostering responsive service for students, families, and campus colleagues
Support bi-weekly payroll administration and help ensure payroll processes are completed accurately and on schedule
Manage grant-related accounting by handling invoicing, reconciliations, journal entries, budget monitoring, reporting, and audit documentation
Partner with Financial Aid to reconcile funding activity and coordinate the drawdown of federal and state aid in accordance with regulatory requirements
Work with external tax and audit advisors to prepare required filings, gather supporting information, and address research or compliance questions
Contribute to the annual audit process by preparing schedules, assisting with requested documentation, and helping resolve follow-up items
Maintain accounting structures and controls, including account setup, access oversight, policy support, and process enhancements that strengthen efficiency and compliance
Produce special financial analyses, surveys, and other assigned reports while assisting with finance-related projects and technology initiatives
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
At least 7 years of progressive accounting experience, including increasing levels of responsibility
Background in non-profit accounting is required
higher education experience is strongly preferred
Prior experience supervising staff and supporting team development
Working knowledge of grant accounting, monthly close activities, audit schedules, and monthly financial reporting
Understanding of internal controls, budgeting, and forecasting principles
Familiarity with financial compliance requirements and coordination with external auditors or tax advisors
A detail-oriented accounting designation such as CPA is highly preferred
