Tammy Power, Recruiting Manager with Robert Half is seeking an experienced Controller to join a well-established construction company based in Bakersfield, California. In this role, you will oversee accounting operations, ensure financial accuracy, and contribute to project success by collaborating with cross-functional teams. This is a permanent, on-site position with limited hybrid flexibility, ideal for candidates who excel in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
Job Responsibility:
Manage all accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, cash management, fixed assets, job cost accounting, and financial closings for month, quarter, and year-end
Prepare and analyze financial schedules, oversee revenue recognition, and monitor margins to ensure accurate and timely reporting
Collaborate with project managers to develop budgets, track change orders, assess cost-to-complete, and mitigate risks
Supervise billing processes such as T& M, progress billing, and retention tracking to ensure compliance with contract terms
Oversee payroll operations, including certified payroll and union/fringe reporting where applicable
Strengthen internal controls, policies, and procedures to maintain compliance with tax and labor regulations
Act as a key user for Sage 300 or similar systems to optimize workflows, reporting, and dashboard functionalities
Lead, mentor, and develop a small accounting team, setting priorities and driving performance improvements
Coordinate with external firms for audits, tax filings, and regulatory compliance while supporting bonding, insurance, and licensing processes
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
CPA or CMA certification is a plus
At least 5 years of progressive accounting experience within the construction or industrial services sector
Expertise in job costing, T& M billing, retention tracking, and analyzing project-level profitability
Proficiency in Sage 300 (Timberline) or similar accounting software, along with advanced Excel skills including pivot tables and lookups
Proven ability to lead teams and communicate effectively across departments, including operations and executive leadership
Strong organizational skills and a process-improvement mindset, with the ability to build structure in fast-paced settings
Familiarity with multi-entity and multi-state operations is advantageous
Knowledge of prevailing wage, certified payroll, and union environments is preferred
