We are looking for an accomplished Controller to oversee accounting operations for a construction company in Houston, Texas. This position will guide financial reporting, strengthen day-to-day accounting processes, and provide leadership across core functions such as payroll, billing, and cash management. The ideal candidate brings deep construction accounting expertise and a strong ability to improve accuracy, controls, and operational efficiency.
Job Responsibility
Direct daily accounting activities across the organization, ensuring accurate execution of core functions and timely completion of deliverables
Manage the full month-end close cycle, including recording journal entries, completing reconciliations, reviewing accruals, and finalizing financial results
Produce financial statements and supporting reports that give leadership clear visibility into company performance and key trends
Oversee construction-specific accounting activities such as job costing, project-level financial tracking, owner invoicing, retainage management, and lien documentation
Lead accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management processes to maintain strong financial operations and liquidity oversight
Review financial performance against expectations, identify variances, and recommend corrective actions or process improvements where needed
Supervise, coach, and develop accounting staff while setting priorities and maintaining accountability for deadlines and quality
Strengthen internal controls, refine accounting procedures, and support audit, tax, and bonding-related documentation requirements
Partner with operational teams to improve accounting and project workflows, including support for system enhancements or implementations when applicable
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
At least 10 years of progressive accounting experience, with significant background in the construction industry
Minimum of 3 years of experience leading or supervising accounting personnel
Strong command of financial reporting, general ledger management, and month-end close activities
Hands-on experience with job costing, project accounting, construction billing, and related documentation practices
Familiarity with payroll oversight, cash flow monitoring, and audit support responsibilities
Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with accounting software or enterprise financial systems
Excellent analytical, organizational, and leadership abilities with a high standard for accuracy and follow-through
