Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Controller to lead accounting operations for a substantial residential real estate portfolio. This position will guide financial reporting, period-end close activities, audit readiness, and regulatory compliance while helping the team operate efficiently and accurately. The ideal candidate brings deep property accounting expertise, strong leadership capability, and a successful background managing high-volume portfolios in a fast-paced environment.

Job Responsibility

  • Direct the accounting function for a large residential property portfolio, ensuring accurate reporting across multiple entities and communities
  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, maintaining timeliness, consistency, and strong financial controls
  • Oversee preparation and review of financial statements, supporting schedules, and portfolio-level analyses for leadership review
  • Manage audit coordination and compliance activities, including responses to auditors and adherence to applicable reporting requirements
  • Supervise, coach, and develop accounting staff while assigning work effectively to support productivity and career growth
  • Partner with operational and development-related teams to address financial issues, improve reporting quality, and support business decisions
  • Monitor deadlines across the department and implement follow-through measures to keep deliverables on schedule
  • Use Yardi to manage accounting workflows, reporting accuracy, and portfolio financial data integrity

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience in a Controller or senior property accounting leadership role
  • Demonstrated success overseeing residential real estate accounting within a large portfolio environment exceeding 10,000 units
  • Strong command of property accounting principles, financial reporting, close procedures, and audit support
  • Hands-on experience with Yardi is required
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and evaluate staff in a supervisory capacity
  • Background working with residential real estate portfolios, including affordable housing exposure, is strongly preferred
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional stakeholders, including operations and development teams
