Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Controller to lead accounting operations for a banking organization based in Chicago IL. This position will guide financial reporting, strengthen compliance practices, and provide leadership on accounting policy across the enterprise. The role works closely with senior leaders to deliver meaningful financial insight, support sound decision-making, and improve operational effectiveness.

Job Responsibility

  • Lead the company’s Accounting functions, ensuring timely, accurate, and well-supported financial results across corporate and business unit activities
  • Serve as a trusted accounting advisor to senior leadership by offering guidance on controllership matters, external reporting, and finance-related priorities
  • Establish and monitor internal controls that align with regulatory expectations, organizational complexity, and sound governance standards
  • Evaluate accounting treatment for both new and ongoing business activities, applying relevant guidance to maintain compliant and consistent reporting
  • Manage productive relationships with external auditors and regulatory parties, supporting reviews, examinations, and reporting requirements
  • Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, enhance scalability, and improve efficiency through process redesign and finance system enablement efforts
  • Partner with cross-functional teams on initiatives that affect accounting activities, financial reporting, and broader business performance
  • Develop, mentor, and lead a collaborative accounting team focused on high performance, accountability, and continuous improvement

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA designation is required
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with significant background in banking or financial services preferred
  • Strong command of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting standards, and applicable regulatory requirements
  • Prior experience in public accounting is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, influence stakeholders, and manage change in a complex environment
  • Experience improving accounting processes and supporting finance systems transformation initiatives
  • Strong communication, strategic thinking, and executive partnership skills

  • Manage the financial month-end closing process to ensure all required financial data is accurate, reconciled, documented and disclosed in a timely manner
  • Review and assess monthly budget/forecast to actual variance and prepare a quantitative and qualitative analysis while streamlining the month-end closing processes and maintaining a high degree of compliance
  • Coordinate and act as liaison for year-end audit and tax returns
  • interact with external auditors, tax consultants, and other service providers
  • Implement, support and oversee SOX compliance measures and implement new policies to meet departmental goals
  • Maximize the performance and contribution of each direct and extended team member through mentoring, professional and best practice development, and leading by example
  • Partner with and maintain strong relationships with cross functional teams (Sales, Operations, HR and IT)
