We are seeking a highly capable and self-directed Controller to lead all financial operations for our growing civil engineering firm. This individual will serve as the sole accounting and finance professional, responsible for overseeing the full spectrum of financial management, including accounting, reporting, budgeting, cash flow, and strategic financial support. The ideal candidate is both hands-on and strategic—comfortable managing day-to-day accounting tasks while providing insights to support project profitability and company growth.
Job Responsibility:
Maintain accurate and timely financial records in accordance with GAAP
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
Lead month-end and year-end close processes
Develop and maintain financial forecasts, budgets, and variance analyses
Provide financial insights and recommendations to leadership
Track and analyze project costs, labor utilization, and profitability
Work closely with project managers to monitor budgets and contract performance
Manage revenue recognition (including percentage-of-completion methods where applicable)
Ensure accurate job costing and reporting across multiple projects
Oversee invoicing, collections, and client billing processes
Manage vendor payments and maintain strong vendor relationships
Monitor cash flow and working capital to ensure operational stability
Process payroll or oversee third-party payroll providers
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations
Manage sales/use tax, payroll tax, and other filings
Coordinate with external CPA firm for tax preparation and audits
Maintain and optimize accounting and project management systems
Develop and document internal controls and financial procedures
Identify opportunities for efficiency and automation
Partner with leadership on financial planning, pricing, and growth strategy
Support business decisions with financial modeling and analysis
Assist with contract review from a financial risk perspective
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
5–10+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in engineering, construction, or professional services
Strong knowledge of job costing and project-based accounting
Experience working as a sole accountant or in a small finance team preferred
Proficiency in accounting software
