Our trusted client is looking for a Controller to support financial operations for a construction business in Clinton Township, Michigan. This is a Contract position, with potential to become permanent, focused on overseeing project-based accounting activities, maintaining accurate corporate financial records, and driving a timely month-end close process. The role works closely with project managers and internal stakeholders to monitor budgets, manage billing workflows, and prepare reliable reporting for leadership and external auditors.
Job Responsibility:
Oversee accounting activity for 20 to 40 active construction projects, ensuring financial records remain accurate, current, and aligned with project performance
Administer client invoicing processes, including AIA billing, while tracking documentation such as lien waivers and other contract-related financial requirements
Manage job cost reporting and work-in-progress analysis to help monitor contract status, profitability, and budget performance across multiple projects
Lead month-end close activities by reconciling accounts, reviewing balance sheet detail, and preparing complete financial information for corporate reporting
Partner with project managers to review change orders, evaluate cost movements, and maintain visibility into project budgets throughout the project lifecycle
Prepare cash flow reporting, including daily cash position updates, to support planning and operational decision-making
Compile corporate financial statements and supporting schedules for review by external auditors responsible for tax filing activities
Use Sage 100 Contractor to maintain accounting records, generate reports, and support construction-specific financial processes
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting is required
At least 3 years of experience in construction project accounting is required
Hands-on experience with Sage 100 Contractor is required
Background in AIA billing, lien waiver administration, and construction invoicing practices
Strong knowledge of month-end close, balance sheet reconciliations, and corporate financial reporting
Experience with job costing, work-in-progress reporting, and budget tracking within the construction industry
Ability to prepare cash flow reports and monitor daily cash activity
Prior accounting experience with a general contractor is preferred
