Job Description

A fast-scaling, Series A enterprise AI startup in NYC is hiring its first in-house Controller / Finance Lead to bring structure, operational rigor, and audit-ready discipline to the company’s financial foundation. This is a foundational ownership seat.

Job Responsibility

  • Financial Reporting & Close: Full ownership of monthly and annual close
  • Accurate revenue recognition and deferred revenue tracking
  • Clean reconciled balance sheet
  • Monthly reporting packages for executive team and Board
  • Working capital visibility and cash flow oversight
  • Accounting Operations & Controls: Day-to-day finance operations (AP, AR, payroll review, vendor payments, treasury)
  • GAAP-aligned policies and internal controls
  • Approval workflows and segregation of duties
  • Process documentation and SOP buildout
  • Revenue & Systems Integrity: Ownership of order-to-cash process
  • Alignment of contract terms, Stripe billing logic, and revenue policies
  • Recurring revenue reporting and gross margin visibility
  • Standardized financial metric definitions
  • System improvements to support scale
  • Audit, Tax & Compliance: Primary contact for external auditors
  • Audit readiness and documentation discipline
  • R&D credit coordination and tax compliance support
  • Fundraising diligence preparation
  • Business Partnership: Budgeting, forecasting, and cash planning ownership
  • Variance analysis and operating insights
  • Vendor contract review and financial risk assessment
  • Clear financial storytelling for leadership and Board

Requirements

  • ~6+ years in accounting, finance, or FP&A
  • SaaS revenue exposure strongly preferred
  • Prior early-stage or first finance hire experience highly valued
  • Has owned full month-end close in a startup or high-growth environment
  • Comfortable operating as a hands-on individual contributor
  • Experience interacting with auditors and preparing leadership reporting
  • CPA preferred but not required
  • Structured, pragmatic, highly accountable
