Joining the Design Delivery Management (DDM) Site Buildings team within the Technical Directorate, you’ll take ownership of the design delivery across a portfolio of critical site buildings under the SZC2203 and SZC2205 contracts. These include essential operational and safety-critical facilities such as emergency response centres, access control buildings, storage facilities, and supporting infrastructure. As Contract Engineering Lead (CEL), you’ll be accountable for managing the full design lifecycle-from early-stage concept through to detailed design-ensuring delivery to programme, quality, safety, and scope requirements. You’ll work closely with an integrated, multi-disciplinary team including mechanical, electrical, nuclear safety, CDM, and architectural specialists, alongside external design partners.
Job Responsibility:
Lead the delivery of design across multiple buildings, ensuring alignment with programme milestones and technical requirements
Act as Responsible Designer and the key point of contact within the Design Delivery Management team
Drive design strategy development and oversee Scope of Works and Technical Specifications
Manage and coordinate external design partners, ensuring consistency and compliance with SZC standards
Oversee design reviews, gateway approvals, and constructability assessments
Ensure robust configuration control and adherence to safety, regulatory, and UK-specific requirements
Identify, manage, and mitigate technical risks, maintaining an up-to-date risk register
Coordinate multi-disciplinary engineering activities across parallel workstreams
Support commercial and project management teams on change control, early warnings, and impact assessments
Lead technical discussions with stakeholders and ensure effective resolution of cross-programme issues
Monitor delivery against agreed schedules and deliverables, ensuring performance and accountability
Requirements:
A strong track record in design management on large-scale, multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects
Experience working within nuclear or other highly regulated environments
Solid understanding of building design, construction, and UK engineering standards (RIBA or equivalent)
Knowledge of designing for safety, security, and resilience against internal/external hazards
Proven ability to lead, coordinate, and influence across complex stakeholder environments
Excellent communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills
A proactive, detail-focused approach with the confidence to manage risk and drive delivery
Degree qualified (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline (civil, structural, mechanical, process, architectural, etc.)
Strong understanding of UK nuclear regulations and legislative requirements
Eligibility for National Security Vetting (CTC level)
Nice to have:
Chartered status
Knowledge of EPR design or nuclear fuel cycle
Broader project lifecycle experience (design through to commissioning or operations)
