The initiative “Living Legacies: Tales of Culture and Resilience”, jointly implemented by UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia (UNESCO Beijing) and the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region (ICHCAP), aims to raise awareness of the interlinkages between intangible cultural heritage and climate change. Against the backdrop of intensifying climate change, cultural heritage is increasingly exposed to environmental risks and transformational pressures. At the same time, the knowledge, practices, and values embedded in living heritage offer important resources for adaptation, resilience, and sustainable living. However, these connections remain underrepresented in public discourse, and there is a need to better communicate how culture is both affected by and contributes to climate action. Through an open call for stories across Asia and the Pacific, the initiative collects personal, experience-based narratives that illustrate how communities experience climate change and respond through cultural practices, knowledge systems, and creativity. By amplifying these voices, the initiative seeks to foster greater understanding, inspire action, and highlight culture as a vital dimension of climate response. Building on the collected submissions, UNESCO Beijing and ICHCAP aim to develop a curated exhibition (virtual and physical) to present selected stories in a structured, engaging, and audience-friendly manner.
