Job Description

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Stroke Physician to join a well-established hyperacute stroke service delivering comprehensive stroke care, including HASU, acute stroke unit, TIA pathways and stroke outpatient services. The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary stroke team contributing to a 24/7 thrombectomy service, hyperacute stroke care and ongoing service development within a high-performing academic stroke centre.

Job Responsibility

  • Provide consultant-led care across the Hyperacute Stroke Unit, Stroke Unit and rapid access TIA service
  • Participate in the assessment and management of hyperacute stroke admissions, including thrombolysis and thrombectomy pathways
  • Share clinical responsibility for stroke inpatient beds and contribute to daily ward rounds, including weekends and bank holidays
  • Deliver stroke outpatient and follow-up clinics, ensuring continuity of care and secondary prevention
  • Work collaboratively with neurology, geriatrics, neuroradiology, neurosurgery and neuro-critical care teams
  • Participate in regional stroke pathways, including patient transfer and repatriation processes
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings, case discussions and care planning
  • Support clinical research, audit and quality improvement initiatives within stroke services
  • Provide teaching and supervision for junior medical staff and multidisciplinary team members
  • Participate in clinical governance, appraisal, CPD and service development activities
  • Provide cross-cover for consultant colleagues and contribute to maintaining a 7-day stroke service

Requirements

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register in Stroke Medicine / Neurology / Geriatric Medicine (or within 6 months of CCT/CESR)
  • MRCP or equivalent qualification
  • Broad training and experience in Stroke Medicine and General Internal Medicine
  • Experience managing hyperacute stroke, including thrombolysis pathways
  • Ability to provide independent clinical decision-making and expert stroke opinion
  • Commitment to teaching and training of junior doctors and MDT staff
  • Participation in clinical audit and governance
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Participation in clinical governance and service development
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Leadership qualities and collaborative working approach
  • Commitment to patient-centred stroke care and CPD
