An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Stroke Medicine to join a developing and forward-thinking Stroke Service delivering comprehensive hyper-acute, acute, and rehabilitation stroke care. The service provides a full stroke pathway, including 24/7 thrombolysis provision, thrombectomy referral pathways through regional neuroscience centres, rapid-access TIA clinics, and multidisciplinary stroke rehabilitation. This appointment forms part of an expansion of specialist stroke services and offers opportunities to develop interests in research, education, service innovation, and stroke pathway development.
Job Responsibility:
Provide consultant-led care for patients across the hyper-acute, acute and rehabilitation stroke pathways
Participate in daily multidisciplinary team ward rounds
Deliver rapid assessment and treatment for stroke patients, including thrombolysis decision-making
Support the rapid-access TIA service
Participate in the stroke consultant on-call rota
Maintain responsibility for the care of patients under their management
Contribute to the development and delivery of high-quality specialist stroke services
Support the continued expansion of the stroke pathway
Work collaboratively with regional neuroscience centres to facilitate mechanical thrombectomy pathways
Participate in national audit programmes
Work closely with Emergency Medicine, Radiology, Neurology, Geriatric Medicine, and Vascular Surgery teams
Collaborate with community stroke rehabilitation services and regional stroke networks
Participate in multidisciplinary discussions regarding patient care and service improvement
Contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
Supervise and support postgraduate trainees and junior medical staff
Participate in clinical education and training activities within the department
Participate actively in clinical governance, quality improvement, and audit activities
Contribute to national stroke audit programmes and service improvement initiatives
Participate in research activities where appropriate
Support the development of new stroke care models
Requirements:
Medical qualification registered with the GMC
Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Geriatric Medicine, General Medicine, Acute Medicine, or Neurology (or within 6 months of CCT)
MRCP qualification
BLS or ALS certification
Ability to demonstrate clinical experience and skill in Stroke Medicine
Sound knowledge of clinical governance practices
Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
Experience supervising postgraduate trainees
Nice to have:
Experience working in or developing a clinical decision unit service
Experience teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduate students
