Job Description:

Consultant Psychiatrist – Acute Psychiatric Unit. Fixed term full time or part time up to 38 hours per week. Appointment available from 18 May 2026 until 11 September 2026. Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across three campuses in the north-east of Melbourne and statewide. We have a highly engaged, diverse and collaborative workforce that is unified by our goal to help people live healthy and fulfilled lives. The Acute Psychiatric Unit (APU) incorporates two mental health programs: Adult Acute Program comprises 19 beds which provide inpatient services to people over 18 years of age who have an acute psychiatric disorder requiring specialist intervention who reside within the catchment LGAs of Banyule and Nillumbik. Four beds are contained within the Intensive Care Area (ICA), with an additional one seclusion room. Fifteen beds are in the Low Support Area (LSA) of the unit, where a sensory room is located for consumer self-regulation. The team has strong MDT support, including Pharmacist, Psychologist, Social Worker and Occupational Therapist. Eating Disorder Program (EDP) which provides five inpatient beds for consumers with an eating disorder. You will not be clinically responsible for these consumers.

Requirements:

  • Be a registered Medical Practitioner in Australia with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or equivalent post graduate specialist qualification
  • Experience in providing services to people with serious mental illness
  • A commitment to community approaches to the care of the mentally ill and providing support for their families
  • Have demonstrated commitment to high quality patient care
  • Current APU consultants preferred but other applicants encouraged
