An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Consultant Psychiatrist in Adult Community Psychiatry to join a well-established community mental health service in Greater London. The post holder will provide clinical and professional leadership within a multidisciplinary team delivering recovery-focused, patient-centred care for adults with complex mental health needs. The role includes responsibility for service development, pathway improvement, clinical governance, and collaborative working across primary care and community services.
Job Responsibility:
Provide consultant input and clinical leadership to the adult community mental health team
Undertake assessment, diagnosis, formulation, medication review, and management planning using a biopsychosocial model
Deliver direct clinical evaluations and follow-up care where required
Support prioritisation and triage of new referrals
Maintain high-quality clinical documentation, including risk assessments and correspondence
Provide advice and clinical support to GPs and primary care teams through case discussions, joint consultations, and, where appropriate, tailored training
Maintain effective communication with patients, carers, and partner agencies
Undertake Mental Health Act assessments and provide statutory reports as required
Hold or obtain Section 12(2) approval and Approved Clinician status
Participate in Care Programme Approach (CPA) processes and multidisciplinary meetings
Support Serious Incident investigations and complaints management when required
Maintain compliance with mandatory training and professional standards
Contribute to the leadership of service performance and delivery of key performance indicators
Participate in service development, pathway redesign, and quality improvement initiatives
Attend consultant, management, and governance meetings
Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision
Participate in clinical audit, service evaluation, and quality improvement programmes
Engage in reflective practice, CPD, appraisal, and revalidation
Requirements:
MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise
Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or within six months of eligibility)
Section 12(2) approval (or ability to achieve within three months)
Approved Clinician status (or ability to achieve within three months)
Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
Excellent knowledge and clinical skills in adult psychiatry
Strong ability to manage complex presentations and clinical uncertainty
Competence in applying a biopsychosocial approach
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to meet duties under the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act
Ability to lead and work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
Commitment to shared leadership and collaborative improvement
Participation in audit, service evaluation, or quality improvement activity
Ability to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and supervision
Ability to appraise and apply clinical evidence
Basic IT skills, including electronic patient records, email, and internet use
Ability to travel between clinical sites as required
Nice to have:
Higher qualification in medical education, clinical research, or management
Additional clinical qualifications or specialist training
Broad specialist or subspecialist experience in community or comparable services
Evidence of leadership in service improvement projects
Research experience or publications
Experience in data management or service reporting
