An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join a Core Community Mental Health Team in Greater London as part of the continued transformation of community mental health services aligned to the NHS Long Term Plan. This substantive consultant post sits within a progressive, multidisciplinary service that integrates statutory and voluntary sector partners to deliver holistic, recovery-focused care within a primary care network model. The successful candidate will provide consultant leadership, direct patient care, and strategic support in developing innovative community mental health pathways.
Job Responsibility:
Provide consultant psychiatric input to the Core Community Mental Health Team
Deliver specialist assessments, diagnosis, formulation, treatment planning, and follow-up care
Conduct approximately 8–10 assessments per week
Manage a caseload of up to 40 patients
Review medication, crisis plans, self-help plans, and risk management strategies
Assess complex mental health presentations, including severe and enduring mental illness
Provide direct consultations for patients registered with local GP practices
Support triage and prioritisation of new referrals
Provide senior clinical leadership to a multidisciplinary team
Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, psychologists, peer coaches, population health staff, and voluntary sector partners
Promote trauma-informed, recovery-focused, socially inclusive care
Support the development of innovative community pathways and integrated services
Participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement programmes
Contribute to policy development, protocols, and service redesign
Maintain accurate electronic patient records and documentation
Provide supervision to junior doctors and MDT colleagues
Undertake workplace-based assessments
Teach small and large groups of healthcare staff and trainees
Participate in Royal College CPD requirements and ongoing appraisal
Requirements:
MBBS / MBChB or equivalent qualification
Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
Minimum 1 year NHS experience
GMC Specialist Register in Psychiatry or within 6 months of CCT
MRCPsych or equivalent higher qualification in Psychiatry
Section 12(2) Approval
Approved Clinician status or eligibility
Good standing with the Royal College CPD programme
Excellent knowledge of mental disorders, including severe enduring illness and personality disorder
Experience managing complex and high-risk presentations
Expertise in risk assessment, formulation, and pharmacotherapy
Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, the Mental Capacity Act, and safeguarding
Strong communication and leadership skills
Ability to organise workload and manage priorities effectively
