An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Consultant Psychiatrist to join a newly developed Memory Service in Greater London and act as Clinical Lead. This newly created post supports service transformation by establishing separate Memory Services and Older Adult Community Mental Health pathways. The successful applicant will play a central leadership role in delivering high-quality dementia care, improving access, and shaping a modern Diagnosis-to-End-of-Life care model. This is an ideal role for a consultant with strong expertise in older adult psychiatry and dementia, and an interest in leadership, innovation, and integrated community mental health care.
Job Responsibility
Provide consultant psychiatric input to the Memory Service MDT
Assess, diagnose, treat, and follow up older adults with suspected dementia and memory disorders
Deliver evidence-based care using a bio-psycho-social model
Promote mental health, well-being, and independence in older adults
Manage complex clinical presentations and diagnostic uncertainty
Ensure safe practice under the Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Capacity Act (MCA)
Provide second opinions for consultant colleagues when required
Act as Clinical Lead for the Memory Service
Lead service development, pathway redesign, and performance improvement
Support creation of integrated pathways between Memory Services and Older Adult CMHTs
Attend business, operational, senior management, and MDT meetings
Contribute to governance, complaints management, and Serious Incident investigations
Work collaboratively within the MDT to promote respect and integrated care
Provide senior advice regarding diagnosis, risk, and treatment planning
Support carers, families, GPs, and community agencies
Supervise junior doctors and other professionals
Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
Participate in audit, research, service evaluation, and QI programmes
Maintain accurate electronic records, letters, Dialog+, and risk documentation
Complete mandatory training and annual appraisal requirements
Participate in the Trust-wide on-call rota
Participate in the daytime Section 12 rota where required
Requirements
MBBS or equivalent qualification
Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
Minimum 1 year NHS experience
GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months
Approved Clinician status (or achievable within 3 months)
Section 12 Approval (or achievable within 3 months)
Excellent knowledge of Psychiatry / Older Adults / Dementia services
Strong communication and leadership skills
Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
Ability to teach and supervise staff
Basic IT skills, including email and electronic records
Higher degree in medical education/research/management
Open Dialogue Training
Additional clinical qualification
Broad NHS specialist or sub-specialist experience
Research/service evaluation experience
Publications/presentations/awards
Experience leading audits, producing service change
Data gathering/management experience
