We are inviting applications for the post of Consultant Physician with a special interest in Gastroenterology to join an established and expanding team in the West Midlands region. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the continued development of specialist GI services. The successful applicant will support the delivery of high-quality care across endoscopy, outpatient clinics, and inpatient services, while also having the opportunity to develop sub-speciality interests such as IBD, nutrition, GI cancer, or therapeutic endoscopy.
Job Responsibility:
Deliver expert clinical care in gastroenterology, including both inpatient and outpatient services
Participate in the provision of general internal medicine, including contribution to the general medical on-call rota
Undertake diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures within JAG-accredited facilities, including colonoscopy, EMR, PEGs, and bowel cancer screening
Contribute to the multidisciplinary management of patients with gastrointestinal and liver disorders, including IBD, hepatology, nutrition, and GI cancers
Provide leadership, guidance, and supervision for junior doctors, trainees, and other healthcare professionals
Participate actively in clinical governance, quality improvement initiatives, and service development within the department
Engage with teaching and training responsibilities for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, as well as junior doctors
Contribute to research, audit, and academic activities in the field of gastroenterology
Requirements:
MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
MRCP (UK) or equivalent
Complete GMC registration with a licence to practice at the time of appointment, or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at the interview date
Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Gastroenterology (or within 6 months of award at time of interview) OR eligibility via CESR
European Speciality Examination in Gastroenterology & Hepatology or equivalent
Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification
Ability to provide expert clinical opinion and take full, independent responsibility for the management of patients with gastroenterological conditions
Proven experience in managing a broad spectrum of gastroenterology and hepatology cases
Evidence of independent clinical practice and strong clinical decision-making skills
Experience in General Medicine and willingness to contribute to acute/general medicine rotas
Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
Experience supervising and mentoring medical students, F1/F2, and speciality trainees
Ability to teach clinical skills effectively
Commitment to continuing professional development, clinical governance, and quality improvement
Willingness to report errors, engage in learning processes, and support service development
Nice to have:
Higher medical or scientific degree relevant to gastroenterology
Minimum 6 months – 1 year NHS experience
Subspecialty interest in hepatology or nutrition, complementary to existing services
Specific teaching qualification or training
Experience in teaching endoscopy and/or delivering structured teaching programmes
Attendance at a formal management/leadership course
Evidence of relevant academic or research achievements in gastroenterology
