An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Microbiologist to join a modern, well-equipped microbiology service in the East of England. The post offers an opportunity to contribute to the delivery and ongoing development of high-quality clinical microbiology, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection prevention services within a progressive, multidisciplinary environment. Job Responsibility:
Provide expert microbiology advice to clinicians and primary care teams regarding the diagnosis, management, and prevention of infection
Interpret, validate, and authorise laboratory results and ensure timely clinical communication
Participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds and clinical case discussions
Contribute to the on-call rota, providing microbiology and infection prevention advice
Develop, review, and authorise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in collaboration with departmental colleagues
Participate in clinical audit programmes and service improvement initiatives
Provide cross-cover for consultant colleagues during annual leave where required
Support the investigation, management, and prevention of communicable diseases
Work closely with Infection Prevention and Control teams to provide expert guidance on infection control measures and outbreak management
Supervise and train junior medical staff in microbiology and infection management
Participate in regular departmental clinical meetings focused on learning, guideline updates, and service development
Contribute to departmental management and operational planning
Act responsibly regarding data governance and confidentiality requirements
Participate in and contribute to audit and research activity supported by the organisation
Engage with ongoing clinical research projects where appropriate
Requirements:
Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent)
Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
Formal training in Medical Microbiology or equivalent speciality training
Minimum 2 years’ clinical experience in Microbiology or Infection specialities
Demonstrated experience in providing microbiology clinical advice and laboratory interpretation
Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
Strong speciality knowledge in Clinical Microbiology and Infection Management
Understanding of infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, and clinical governance
Ability to communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams
Nice to have:
RCPath or equivalent postgraduate qualification
Experience contributing to audit and quality improvement
Experience working within multidisciplinary clinical environments
Evidence of audit participation or research involvement
