Job Description:

The Great Western Hospital is pleased to be able to offer the opportunity to Stroke Medicine Consultants to join the existing team. The successful candidate will be working closely with the existing team of Consultants to contribute and improving our stroke pathways and SSNAP performance. We believe that this is essential for us to provide a first class service where the patients and their relatives come first.

Job Responsibility:

  • Multidisciplinary team working
  • Providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting
  • Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge
  • Development of sub specialty interests
  • Carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties
  • Provision of cover for Consultant colleagues' periods of leave
  • Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical education
  • Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances
  • Participate in an out of hours consultant rota
  • Support the Clinical Lead in policy and strategy development
  • Contribute to the leadership and development of Services
  • Ensure effective communication and involvement of staff
  • Work in partnership with colleagues in other Divisions
  • Assist in the cost effective utilisation of resources
  • Work within the Trusts framework for Clinical Governance and Risk
  • Undertake direct supervision of junior colleagues
  • Undertake investigations and report writing for incidents and participate in clinical risk management

Requirements:

  • Fully Registered with the GMC
  • Clinical training/experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT
  • Expertise in all aspects of stroke medicine
  • Ability to teach clinical skills to trainees and multi-disciplinary teams
  • Demonstrable multi-disciplinary team leadership skills
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals

  • Work with the local Hyper Acute Stroke Centre to ensure robust protocols for the transfer of patients following hyperacute treatments and/or stabilisation
  • Assist the management team with the development of future Consultant and junior doctor roles
  • Share responsibility for providing evidence-based standards of care for all inpatients and outpatients
  • Have regard at all times to the clinical and quality standards set out in the Patients Charter and the local purchasers contracts
  • Liaise effectively and on a timely basis with General Practitioners, community services and all healthcare agencies
  • Encourage and foster the governance process at clinical, managerial and medical levels and to take part in regional audit in support of evidence-based medicine
