We are seeking an experienced and motivated Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology to join a well-established and expanding Head & Neck Cancer service in the East Midlands. This is an exciting opportunity to lead and contribute to a multidisciplinary team providing high-quality, patient-centred care across the full spectrum of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) oncology. This role offers an excellent balance of clinical, surgical, educational, and leadership responsibilities — ideal for either an experienced consultant or a newly qualified specialist seeking professional growth and mentorship within a collaborative and innovative team.

Job Responsibility

  • Deliver expert clinical and surgical care to oncology patients, particularly those referred under the 2-Week Wait (2WW) and Head & Neck cancer pathways
  • Participate actively in Head & Neck, Skin, and Deformity MDTs, contributing to multidisciplinary case management and decision-making
  • Undertake general OMFS emergency on-call cover (1:5), providing specialist input across a wide range of maxillofacial emergencies
  • Lead and contribute to departmental initiatives, governance meetings, and service development projects
  • Perform clinical duties including outpatient clinics, theatre sessions (GA and LA), and oncology case management
  • Supervise and mentor junior doctors, dental core trainees, and medical students, fostering a strong culture of learning and clinical excellence
  • Participate in research, audit, and quality improvement projects to support innovation within the service
  • Engage in Continuing Professional Development (CPD), with study leave time and funding available
  • Collaborate with colleagues across multidisciplinary teams to continuously improve patient outcomes and service delivery

Requirements

  • Complete GMC Registration with a licence to practise
  • Relevant speciality degree qualification in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery or equivalent
  • Completion of Speciality Training (CST or equivalent) or within 6 months of completion at the time of interview
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
  • Proven experience in audit, quality improvement, and teaching
  • Strong communication and organisational skills, with a team-focused approach
  • Commitment to collaborative, patient-centred care across oncology and reconstructive pathways

Nice to have

  • Higher qualifications (MD, PhD, or equivalent)
  • Medical Education qualification (preferably at Master’s level)
  • Experience in curriculum development, leadership, or service innovation
  • Record of publications or national presentations in oncology or surgical education
  • Research experience in clinical quality improvement or oncology outcomes

What we offer

  • 1.5 SPAs included in a standard 10-PA job plan, with potential for additional SPAs based on responsibilities such as teaching, research, or leadership roles
  • Opportunities available for involvement in medical education, curriculum development, clinical research, and policy planning
