Consultant in General Surgery - Specialist interest in Abdominal Wall Reconstruction and Benign Coloproctology. Applications are invited for the above post to join 11 consultant surgeons, comprising of 5 Colorectal surgeons, 2 Upper GI surgeons and 4 General Surgeons. The team also work alongside both the Breast and Urology Consultant Surgeon teams. The current on-call commitment for General Surgery will be 1 in 8. Great Western Hospital is a growing Trust providing an increasing range of surgical procedures to its local community. The postholder will be expected to undertake a broad range of inpatient and daycase general surgical procedures. The successful candidate will be expected to continue to develop the abdominal wall reconstruction service and work within the department of coloproctology to develop benign coloproctology services.
Job Responsibility:
Multidisciplinary team working
Providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting
Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support)
Development of sub specialty interests that fit in with Division needs and the strategic direction of the Trust
Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties
Contributing to undergraduate and post-graduate and continuing medical education activity
Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical education
Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances
Participation in an out of hours consultant rota
To support the Clinical Lead in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the Division Management Team
To contribute to the leadership and development of Services
Ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the Division
Work in partnership with colleagues in other Divisions within the Trust
Assist in the cost effective utilisation of resources
Development of clinical policies and adherence to standing orders, standing financial instructions and financial procedures
Undertake direct supervision of junior colleagues and participate in departmental/trust wide teaching programmes
Undertake investigations and report writing for incidents and participate in clinical risk management
Participate in clinical effectiveness activities
Maintain and foster improvements in the quality and standards of clinical services
Lead the safeguarding of high standards of care
Requirements:
Fully registered with the GMC
FRCS (UK) or equivalent
Clinical training/experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT
Expertise in full range of acute surgical conditions
Ability to lead a multi-professional team and take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
Sub-speciality interests will be supported
Demonstrable ability to manage priorities
Demonstrable multi-disciplinary team leadership skills
