An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in General Internal Medicine to join a newly established and expanding department focused on delivering comprehensive care to patients with complex, multi-morbid medical conditions. This role offers the chance to work across inpatient and outpatient settings, managing a diverse case mix ranging from acute presentations to elderly patients with complex needs. The successful candidate will work closely with Acute Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, and speciality teams within a collaborative multidisciplinary framework while supporting training and service development initiatives.
Job Responsibility:
Diagnose and manage a broad spectrum of medical conditions, including complex multi-morbid patients
Provide continuous care in both inpatient and outpatient settings for patients not aligned to a single speciality
Deliver ward-based care across designated medical wards and provide input for medical outliers on surgical wards
Direct treatment plans while coordinating specialist input where required
Participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds, clinical discussions, and discharge planning
Participate in the general medical on-call rota (1 in 13 weekends) with time off in lieu
Contribute to the management of acutely unwell patients and provide senior decision-making support
Supervise clinical fellows, including those pursuing CESR in General Internal Medicine
Support departmental education through ward huddles, morbidity and mortality meetings, and structured teaching
Opportunity to undertake roles such as Educational Supervisor for Foundation trainees or Royal College Tutor
Participate in clinical governance, audit, appraisal, and CPD activities
Contribute to service development and quality improvement initiatives
Engage in research activity with opportunities for NIHR and commercial study recruitment
Requirements:
MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
MRCP or equivalent
Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
Entry on GMC Specialist Register in General Internal Medicine or within 6 months via CCT/CESR
Minimum 1 year NHS experience
Experience managing general medical patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings
Participation in general medical on-call at Registrar or Consultant level
Evidence of clinical leadership and service delivery
Ability to manage complex patients with multiple co-morbidities
Commitment to medical education and training
Experience in appraisal, assessment, and supervision of trainees
Ability to assess clinical competencies and support professional development
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
Leadership, organisational, and decision-making abilities
Commitment to high-quality patient-centred care and CPD
Nice to have:
