An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Gastroenterology to join a dynamic and expanding gastroenterology service in the East Midlands. The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of high-quality gastroenterology services, including endoscopy, outpatient clinics, and inpatient care. This role offers the opportunity to develop subspecialty interests such as hepatology, IBD, nutrition, or therapeutic endoscopy within a well-established multidisciplinary team.
Job Responsibility:
Provide comprehensive gastroenterology services, including outpatient clinics, inpatient care, and endoscopy procedures
Deliver diagnosis and management of a wide range of gastrointestinal and liver disorders
Participate in elective and emergency care, including on-call commitments (currently 1:16 rota)
Perform and support advanced endoscopic procedures, including colonoscopy, therapeutic interventions, and PEG placements
Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, including clinical nurse specialists, dieticians, and other specialities
Contribute to bowel cancer screening and specialist GI services
Provide supervision, teaching, and mentorship to junior doctors and medical students
Participate in clinical governance, audit, and Quality Improvement Projects (QIPs)
Engage in research, innovation, and service development initiatives within gastroenterology
Maintain continuous professional development (CPD) and adhere to GMC standards and clinical guidelines
Requirements:
MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
MRCP qualification
Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
Entry on GMC Specialist Register in Gastroenterology (or within 6 months of CCT)
European Speciality Examination in Gastroenterology & Hepatology (or equivalent)
Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification
Broad experience in Gastroenterology and General Medicine
Evidence of independent clinical practice
Experience in clinical decision-making and risk management
Experience in endoscopy and management of GI disorders
Experience in audit and/or Quality Improvement Projects (QIPs)
Experience supervising junior doctors and working within MDTs
Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across a wide spectrum of GI conditions
Strong endoscopic and procedural skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
Strong organisational and clinical prioritisation skills
Ability to manage complex clinical scenarios and workload pressures
Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
Participation in clinical audit and governance activities
Ability to apply evidence-based practice in clinical care
Nice to have:
Higher medical or scientific degree relevant to Gastroenterology
Subspecialty interest (e.g., Hepatology, IBD, Nutrition, GI Oncology, Therapeutic Endoscopy)
