An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine to join a busy consultant-led service in Ireland. The post focuses on delivering high-quality inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology care while supporting acute general medical services. A key objective of this role is to support waiting list recovery across outpatient clinics and endoscopy services, while contributing to multidisciplinary working, service development, education, and governance. The service provides comprehensive luminal gastroenterology, inflammatory bowel disease care, cancer pathway integration, and established bowel screening services.
Job Responsibility:
Provide consultant-led inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology services, including ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and endoscopic procedures
Deliver General Internal Medicine clinical care and participate in the general medical consultant on-call rota
Manage patients across acute and elective pathways, ensuring timely diagnosis, treatment, and discharge
Support reducing the waiting list backlog for outpatient and endoscopy activities
Provide specialist consultation to other medical and surgical teams when required
Participate in the development and implementation of agreed clinical care pathways and protocols
Ensure high standards of clinical documentation, safety, and patient experience
Work collaboratively with consultant colleagues to support operational performance, service efficiency, and pathway optimisation
Participate in service planning, clinical directorate activity, and quality improvement initiatives
Contribute to shaping gastroenterology service delivery and accreditation standards
Supervise, train, and support non-consultant hospital doctors and multidisciplinary staff
Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes
Support induction, appraisal, and professional development of junior staff
Participate in clinical audit, risk management, data reporting, and governance frameworks
Support incident reporting, patient safety initiatives, and compliance with regulatory standards
Maintain continuous professional development and revalidation requirements
Participate in rota cover arrangements, including leave cover
Attend multidisciplinary meetings, governance meetings, and service planning forums
Comply with organisational policies, health and safety standards, confidentiality, and data protection
Requirements:
Registration as a Specialist on the Specialist Division of the Medical Council in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine
Eligibility to take up a consultant appointment under national regulatory requirements
Access to transport for service delivery requirements
Ability to meet statutory and occupational health standards
Extensive experience in Gastroenterology, Endoscopy, and General Internal Medicine
Experience delivering consultant-level inpatient and outpatient care
Demonstrated leadership and multidisciplinary working capability
Experience participating in audit, governance, and service development
Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
Strong clinical judgement and decision-making capability
Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
Ability to manage service demand, performance, and operational priorities
Commitment to continuous service improvement and patient safety
Integrity, professionalism, and adaptability within evolving healthcare systems
