An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology to join a growing team of consultants in Northern Ireland. This post supports the continued development and expansion of diabetes and endocrine services, with a strong focus on outpatient delivery alongside inpatient general medical responsibilities. The role offers opportunities to develop specialist interests, particularly in diabetes foot and maternity services, with flexibility to accommodate additional subspecialty clinics. The post holder will also contribute to the General Internal Medicine on-call rota and ward-based care, operating within a structured ward / non-ward rotational model.
Job Responsibility:
Deliver high-quality consultant-led care in Diabetes, Endocrinology, and General Internal Medicine
Participate in a rotational model of ward-based care and outpatient speciality delivery
Provide consultant-led inpatient management for patients admitted with diabetes and endocrine-related conditions
Deliver outpatient clinics, including new patient, follow-up, and speciality clinics
Contribute to the development and expansion of specialist services, particularly diabetes foot care and diabetes maternity care
Participate in the acute medical on-call rota, including post-take ward rounds and emergency assessment support
Provide clinical leadership and supervision of junior medical staff and trainees
Maintain high standards of documentation, patient safety, and clinical governance
Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement, appraisal, and revalidation activities
Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and departmental teaching programmes
Attend departmental governance meetings and multidisciplinary case reviews
Engage in continuous professional development in line with Royal College guidance
Support service redesign and pathway development in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams
Promote evidence-based practice and innovation in service delivery
Participate in job planning and operational service discussions
Requirements:
MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
MRCP or equivalent postgraduate qualification
CCT in Diabetes & Endocrinology (or within 6 months of award), or equivalent via portfolio pathway for non-UK trained applicants
Complete registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise
Extensive training and experience in Diabetes and Endocrinology within an accredited training programme
Experience in General Internal Medicine at consultant level or equivalent
Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement
Experience in undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching
Demonstrated commitment to evidence-based practice
Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
Strong multidisciplinary teamwork and communication skills
Commitment to partnership working and patient-centred care
Interest in education and supervision
Ability to manage complex clinical workloads
Nice to have:
MD / PhD or equivalent higher degree
Experience in diabetes foot services or diabetes maternity services
