An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Acute Medicine to join an expanding Acute Medicine service within a progressive and innovation-focused department. The postholder will play a key role across the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Acute Assessment Unit (AAU), Acute Admissions, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), and post-take services, supporting a modern clinical model focused on rapid assessment, early senior decision-making, and improved patient flow.
Job Responsibility:
Provide senior clinical leadership across AMU, AAU, Acute Admissions, SDEC, and post-take/outlier activity
Lead consultant ward rounds and ensure early senior assessment of acute admissions
Support rapid assessment, clinical decision-making, and discharge planning
Undertake practical procedures and contribute to the management of complex acute medical patients
Participate in the General Internal Medicine on-call rota and weekend cover
Lead MDT discussions and coordinate patient pathways across acute and community interfaces
Work collaboratively with ED, speciality teams, and community partners to improve patient flow
Support operational management and ongoing development of Acute Medicine services
Contribute to pathway development aligned with GIRFT and national best practice
Provide clinical supervision and mentorship to trainees, fellows, and physician associates
Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes
Act as an Educational Supervisor where appropriate
Participate in morbidity & mortality meetings, clinical governance, and audit initiatives
Contribute to quality improvement and patient safety programmes
Maintain CPD, appraisal, and revalidation requirements
Support research and evidence-based practice integration into clinical pathways
Requirements:
MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
MRCP or equivalent
Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
Entry on GMC Specialist Register for Acute Medicine or General Internal Medicine (or within 6 months of CCT/CESR)
Minimum 1 year NHS experience
Broad experience in Acute Medicine and General Internal Medicine
Demonstrated leadership in acute clinical environments
Experience supervising junior doctors and multidisciplinary staff
Evidence of service development, audit, or research involvement
Evidence of completed clinical audit within the last 18 months
Understanding of clinical governance, audit processes, and NHS quality frameworks
Participation in service improvement initiatives
Experience delivering undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
Ability to provide formal and informal clinical teaching
Educational supervision skills or accreditation
Understanding of NHS management structures
Evidence of risk management awareness
Strong organisational and leadership skills
Excellent clinical decision-making and situational awareness
Strong communication and multidisciplinary teamwork skills
Leadership ability with commitment to service development
IT literacy, including the use of clinical information systems
Commitment to equality, professional development, and organisational improvement
Nice to have:
Higher degree or postgraduate qualification
Accreditation in educational supervision
