Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Haematologist to join a forward-thinking and supportive service in the East of England. This substantive consultant post offers the opportunity to provide a comprehensive clinical and laboratory haematology service while also developing a specialist interest through protected weekly sessions at a leading tertiary centre. This role is ideal for applicants seeking long-term progression, subspecialty development, and involvement in modern service transformation programmes. The successful candidate will join an established consultant team delivering high-quality care across inpatient, outpatient, oncology, coagulation, transfusion, and laboratory services.

Job Responsibility

  • Provide comprehensive consultant-led haematology care for inpatients and outpatients
  • Manage new referrals and follow-up haematology patients
  • Oversee patients attending chemotherapy/day treatment services
  • Conduct weekly Specialist clinics supported by CNS teams
  • Deliver regular telephone follow-up clinics
  • Participate in coagulation and thrombosis clinics on a rota basis
  • Perform daily ward rounds and weekend on-call ward reviews when rostered
  • Offer specialist advice regarding blood films, bone marrow results, blood product use, bleeding disorders, clotting disorders, laboratory interpretation
  • Participate in GIRFT, cost improvement, and evidence-based redesign programmes
  • Support audit, governance, and quality improvement projects
  • Supervise junior doctors and multidisciplinary staff
  • Act as educational or clinical supervisor where appropriate
  • Contribute to departmental strategy and long-term workforce planning

Requirements

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCP Part 1 and Part 2
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
  • Clinical training equivalent to UK CCT in Haematology or General Internal Medicine
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience

  • Share responsibility for inpatient attending cover, outpatient reviews and acute haematology input
  • Take part in the 1:7 consultant on-call rota, with prospective cover
  • Provide senior consultant oversight for acute haematology admissions, inpatient haematology management, liaison haematology queries, abnormal laboratory results requiring urgent management, urgent issues arising within the haematology day unit
  • Work closely with consultant colleagues, nursing teams, laboratory teams, pharmacy and wider MDT colleagues to provide safe, effective and high-quality care
