An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Gastroenterologist to join a well-established and collaborative team in the North West region. The post involves inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology, endoscopy, and cross-cover for GI bleeding services. You will work within a highly skilled multidisciplinary team of Consultants, Nurse Consultants, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and trainees. Sub-speciality areas currently within the department include bowel cancer screening, IBD, hepatology, and ERCP/therapeutic endoscopy.
Job Responsibility:
Provide consultant-led care for gastroenterology inpatients and outpatients
Undertake diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy sessions, with opportunities to develop sub-speciality interests
Participate in the 1 in 8 GI bleeding on-call rota, providing 24/7 cover at weekends
Contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings, working closely with colleagues in surgery, oncology, radiology, pathology, and nursing teams
Ensure timely and effective communication with GPs, community services, and the wider healthcare network
Engage in teaching and supervision of junior medical staff, medical students, and allied health professionals
Play an active role in clinical governance, audit, and service development to maintain and enhance the quality of care
Take part in departmental and divisional management, contributing to strategy and service redesign
Support research and innovation within gastroenterology, promoting evidence-based practice and service improvements
Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
Contribute to training programmes in partnership with regional medical schools
Supervise and mentor junior colleagues and contribute to their appraisal and assessment
Engage in continuous professional development, annual appraisal, and revalidation
Requirements:
Complete registration with the GMC and a licence to practise
MRCP (UK) or equivalent
Entry on the Specialist Register in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine, or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview
Clinical training and experience equivalent to CCT requirements in Gastroenterology and GIM
JAG accreditation in upper and lower GI diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy
Broad experience in the management of gastrointestinal diseases
Ability to provide comprehensive patient management, and to train/supervise junior staff and students
Evidence of regular audit participation and awareness of governance processes
Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
Nice to have:
Higher degree (MD, PhD) or equivalent research experience
Sub-speciality interest and expertise to complement colleagues
Membership in appropriate professional societies
Experience of a multidisciplinary team working across specialities
Experience in teaching and formal educational training courses
