An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and dedicated Consultant Dermatologist to join a well-established and dynamic dermatology team in the South West region. This is a fixed-term post offering exposure to a wide range of dermatological conditions, including systemic diseases, cancerous and routine lesions, paediatric dermatology, and skin surgery. The post also includes responsibility for inpatient referrals, providing advice and guidance to primary care, conducting virtual clinic reviews, and participating in local multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings. The successful applicant will join a supportive department that works collaboratively with specialist nurses, plastic surgery colleagues, and allied professionals to deliver a comprehensive dermatology service.
Job Responsibility:
Provide high-quality, evidence-based care for patients across the full spectrum of general and specialist dermatological conditions
Lead and manage dermatology clinics covering systemic diseases (e.g. psoriasis), pigmented lesions and skin cancer clinics, paediatric dermatology, and minor surgical procedures
Participate in local and regional skin cancer MDTs and joint clinics with surgical colleagues
Provide specialist advice and guidance to primary care, supporting virtual consultations
Provide inpatient dermatology consultations and reviews as required
Contribute to service development, research, audit, and quality improvement initiatives
Participate in clinical governance, risk management, and incident review processes
Ensure that clinical practice aligns with national standards, including NICE guidelines and Trust clinical governance frameworks
Take an active role in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, including teaching, supervision, and appraisal of junior doctors and medical students
Provide clinical leadership within the dermatology service, promoting best practices and patient-centred care
Support the Clinical Lead in the development and implementation of departmental policies, strategies, and quality improvement initiatives
Contribute to the efficient use of departmental resources and ensure the delivery of safe and effective services
Foster multidisciplinary collaboration across specialities and work in partnership with colleagues in related divisions
Participate in workforce planning to ensure the dermatology team maintains the appropriate skills and staffing levels necessary to meet service demand
Engage in departmental and divisional meetings, contributing to governance, service improvement, and operational decision-making
Actively participate in clinical audit, quality improvement, and research projects within dermatology
Support the development and delivery of the division’s annual clinical governance plan and quality strategy
Promote evidence-based practice and compliance with national and local clinical standards
Contribute to risk management processes, ensuring timely completion of assessments and effective handling of incidents and complaints
Encourage and support staff participation in education, training, and continuous professional development activities
Requirements:
Complete registration and licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC)
Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Dermatology (or equivalent for non-UK applicants) or within six months of completion at the time of interview
MRCP (UK) or equivalent postgraduate qualification
Broad clinical experience equivalent to that required for obtaining a UK CCT in Dermatology
Demonstrated expertise across a wide range of dermatological conditions
Proven ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care and decision-making
Experience leading a multidisciplinary team and providing supervision to junior doctors and nursing staff
Subspecialty interests aligned with the department’s service priorities (e.g. skin cancer, inflammatory skin disease, or paediatric dermatology)
Evidence of effective leadership and management skills, including experience in clinical governance, quality improvement, and audit
Ability to prioritise workload efficiently and manage time effectively
Demonstrated commitment to maintaining high professional standards and continuous service improvement
Nice to have:
Formal management or leadership training
Experience in service redesign or clinical pathway development
