An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Adult Psychiatrist to join a well-established Acute Adult Mental Health service in Wales. This is a replacement consultant post within an inpatient adult mental health team, joining a wider group of consultants responsible for delivering acute adult psychiatry services across the Health Board. The successful candidate will work within a supportive multidisciplinary environment and play a key role in the assessment, treatment and ongoing management of adults requiring acute inpatient mental health care. The post is based within an acute adult inpatient setting and forms part of a consultant team supporting admission and treatment wards. The successful appointee will work closely with nursing, psychology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and wider crisis/home treatment teams to ensure high-quality, patient-centred care. The role also includes active participation in service development, clinical governance, teaching and on-call duties.
Job Responsibility
Provide consultant-level psychiatric care for adult inpatients, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning and ongoing clinical management
Take continuing responsibility for the care of patients admitted under the post holder's care, working collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team
Lead and contribute to regular ward rounds, MDT meetings, patient reviews and discharge planning
Support the development of individualised treatment pathways for patients with acute mental health needs
Work closely with consultant colleagues and other mental health services to ensure continuity of care and appropriate clinical cover
Provide supervision, support and training to junior medical staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team
Participate in the Health Board's clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and risk management processes
Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, educational supervision and continuing medical education activities
Support research and service development activity where appropriate
Participate in the 1:14 non-resident on-call rota with prospective cover
Requirements
Full GMC registration and Licence to Practise
On the GMC Specialist Register in General Adult Psychiatry, or eligible for CCT within 6 months of interview / equivalent route to specialist registration
Evidence of the ability to develop effective working relationships across multidisciplinary teams
Experience of working with management and clinical colleagues to improve services
Evidence of partnership working with other agencies
Evidence of teaching and training postgraduate and/or undergraduate clinical staff
Experience of audit / clinical governance activity
Experience of the requirements of the Approved Clinician role under the Mental Health Act 1983
Clinical skills, including competence in using the Mental Health Act 1983 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005
Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work effectively under pressure and contribute to service development
Ability to participate in the on-call rota
