We are looking for a detail-oriented Construction Project Accountant to support the financial performance of heavy civil construction work in New York. This contract opportunity has the potential to become permanent and is ideal for someone with a strong background in project-based accounting who can partner with operations teams to keep budgets, reporting, and billing activities accurate and on track. The role will focus on financial oversight, cost visibility, and day-to-day accounting support across active construction projects.
Job Responsibility:
Develop and maintain project budgets, tracking expenditures against forecasts to help keep financial performance aligned with contract goals.
Review job cost data and perform financial evaluations to identify trends, measure profitability, and highlight potential cost overruns.
Produce regular project financial summaries, including variance reporting, cost analysis, and other performance metrics for leadership review.
Work closely with project managers and field teams to ensure accounting activity supports operational plans and overall project objectives.
Use construction and project accounting systems to strengthen cost control, improve reporting accuracy, and maintain reliable financial records.
Prepare documentation and reporting tied to monthly billings, project estimates, and change order activity.
Process invoicing activities by handling both accounts payable and accounts receivable functions for assigned projects.
Reconcile financial records and support accurate month-end reporting for construction-related transactions.
Requirements:
At least 3 years of accounting experience supporting construction projects, preferably within heavy highway, infrastructure, or related civil work.
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, construction management, engineering, business, or comparable hands-on experience in the construction industry.
Demonstrated knowledge of project accounting principles, budgeting, cost tracking, and financial reporting in a construction environment.
Ability to manage several priorities at once while working independently and meeting deadlines.
Strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to coordinate effectively across project and accounting teams.
Experience preparing monthly financial reports, reconciliations, and cost-related analysis for active jobs.
Proficiency with construction management or accounting software and standard business applications used for financial reporting.
