Our client is a leading UK infrastructure contractor they are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Construction Lawyer to join its dynamic in-house legal team. This pivotal role offers the opportunity to be at the forefront of the nation’s most significant and complex infrastructure projects, including major transport, energy, and utilities schemes. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive legal advice and support across all phases of the project lifecycle, from tender and procurement through to contract execution, delivery, and dispute resolution.
Job Responsibility:
Drafting and Negotiating Contracts: Preparing, reviewing, and negotiating a variety of construction and engineering contracts, including standard forms (JCT, NEC (especially ECC), FIDIC) and bespoke agreements, with a particular focus on large-scale infrastructure projects
Risk Management: Identifying, assessing, and mitigating legal and commercial risks associated with construction delivery and contracting strategies
Advisory Role: Providing timely and pragmatic legal advice to project teams, senior management, and commercial departments on contract interpretation, statutory and regulatory compliance (e.g., CDM Regulations, Health and Safety), and company policies
Dispute Resolution: Managing and supporting claims, adjudications, arbitrations, and litigation, including instructing and collaborating with external counsel
Requirements:
Possessing a valid practising certificate in England & Wales or another recognised UK jurisdiction
A minimum of 4+ years Post-Qualified Experience (PQE) gained within a recognised law firm or in-house legal department, with a demonstrable specialism in non-contentious and contentious construction law
Significant experience working on large-scale infrastructure, civil engineering, or major projects
In-depth, working knowledge of the NEC suite of contracts (particularly ECC) is essential
Excellent communication, negotiation, and drafting skills
Must be a proactive, commercially astute, and solutions-focused team player who can build strong relationships across the business
Nice to have:
Direct experience with a contractor is highly desirable
Familiarity with other standard forms (JCT, ICE) is beneficial
