Job Responsibility:

  • Assist in monitoring bridge and roadway construction activities to ensure conformance with approved plans, specifications, and safety requirements
  • Conduct field measurements, collect data, and document bridge elements including substructure, superstructure, deck, bearings, joints, and approaches
  • Prepare and maintain accurate daily reports, photographs, and inspection records in accordance with IDOT and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) documentation procedures
  • Support engineers by verifying quantities, checking materials, and assisting in evaluating workmanship and compliance
  • Identify and report deficiencies, non-conforming work, or safety concerns to supervisory staff
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, shop drawings, and contract plans under direction from engineering personnel
  • Communicate effectively with project engineers, contractors, and IDOT personnel to coordinate field inspection activities and resolve routine construction issues
  • Assist with bridge condition assessments, data collection, and report preparation in accordance with National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS)
  • Maintain field equipment, tools, and testing instruments in proper working condition

Requirements:

  • Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, or a related field with strong emphasis in mathematics or applied science
  • Up to three (3) years of experience in construction inspection, transportation infrastructure, or related field preferred
  • Familiarity with IDOT policies, procedures, and documentation standards desirable
  • Working knowledge of construction materials, inspection methods, and field data collection techniques
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word) and ability to learn design or inspection software (MicroStation experience a plus)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, perform field measurements, and maintain organized project records
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and travel to project sites throughout Illinois
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate company vehicle
