Job Responsibility:
Assist in monitoring bridge and roadway construction activities to ensure conformance with approved plans, specifications, and safety requirements
Conduct field measurements, collect data, and document bridge elements including substructure, superstructure, deck, bearings, joints, and approaches
Prepare and maintain accurate daily reports, photographs, and inspection records in accordance with IDOT and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) documentation procedures
Support engineers by verifying quantities, checking materials, and assisting in evaluating workmanship and compliance
Identify and report deficiencies, non-conforming work, or safety concerns to supervisory staff
Read and interpret engineering drawings, shop drawings, and contract plans under direction from engineering personnel
Communicate effectively with project engineers, contractors, and IDOT personnel to coordinate field inspection activities and resolve routine construction issues
Assist with bridge condition assessments, data collection, and report preparation in accordance with National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS)
Maintain field equipment, tools, and testing instruments in proper working condition
Requirements:
Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, or a related field with strong emphasis in mathematics or applied science
Up to three (3) years of experience in construction inspection, transportation infrastructure, or related field preferred
Familiarity with IDOT policies, procedures, and documentation standards desirable
Working knowledge of construction materials, inspection methods, and field data collection techniques
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word) and ability to learn design or inspection software (MicroStation experience a plus)
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, perform field measurements, and maintain organized project records
Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and travel to project sites throughout Illinois
Valid driver’s license and ability to operate company vehicle
