The Commvault L2 Backup Engineer is responsible for providing advanced operational support, troubleshooting, and administration of enterprise backup environments leveraging Commvault solutions. This role involves resolving escalated issues, maintaining backup infrastructure, and ensuring data protection and recovery processes meet organizational requirements.
Job Responsibility:
Operate, maintain, and optimize enterprise backup environments using Commvault
Troubleshoot and resolve L2-level incidents, including backup failures, restore issues, and infrastructure errors
Analyze daily backup jobs, identify root causes for failures, and implement corrective actions to maximize backup success rates
Perform configuration changes, patching, and upgrades for Commvault environments as per design and compliance requirements
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (storage, virtualization, network) to resolve complex issues and support integrated backup solutions
Provide escalation support for L1 engineers and act as a technical point of contact for managed service providers and customers
Ensure backup and restore operations are aligned with data protection and disaster recovery strategies
Maintain and update documentation for backup procedures, configurations, and incident resolutions
Participate in capacity planning, utilization analysis, and optimization of backup storage resources
Support integration of various storage technologies (SAN, NAS, Object Storage) with Commvault backup systems
Prepare and deliver regular status and progress reports on backup environment health and activities
Requirements:
Minimum 4 years of IT experience, with at least 2 years in Commvault backup administration and support
Hands-on experience with enterprise-scale Commvault deployments, including backup, recovery, and archiving
Strong troubleshooting skills for backup software, tape libraries, disk-to-disk backup systems, and SAN connectivity
Familiarity with storage protocols (NFS, CIFS, iSCSI, FC) and integration with backup solution
General knowledge of networking fundamentals and operating systems (Windows, Linux)
Experience with capacity planning, utilization analysis, and backup optimization
Excellent communication, documentation, and customer service skills
Ability to work in a 24/7 or rotational shift environment as required
Nice to have:
Certifications in Commvault or other enterprise backup solutions
Experience with automation/scripting (PowerShell, Python, Shell) is a plus
ITIL Foundation or experience in ITIL-based operational environments
Exposure to other backup solutions (Veeam, Cohesity, Veritas NetBackup) and storage technologies (NetApp, Dell EMC, Data Domain)
