Are you passionate about animal welfare and community safety? We are looking for a dedicated Community Safety Officer - Animal Management to join our team at a local council based South East of the CBD. This is a Level 4 position where you will play a vital role in maintaining the safety and amenity of our city. As a Community Safety Officer, you will facilitate compliance with various Acts and Council By-Laws. You will act as an Authorised Officer under the Dog and Cat Management Act, Local Government Act, and other relevant legislation. This role is not just about enforcement; it’s about promoting responsible pet ownership and engaging with our residents through education and awareness programs. You will work under general direction within a supportive, multi-disciplinary team, reporting to the Team Leader Community Safety.
Job Responsibility:
Undertake inspections, surveillance, and investigations to assess compliance with legislation and issue infringements or notices when necessary
Provide specialist advice to the public, handle animal-related issues, and foster community understanding of responsible ownership
Collect evidence, take statements, and prepare detailed Briefs of Evidence for external bodies
Implement education programs and maintain a professional, helpful manner when dealing with the public
Provide operational back fill and support for Local Nuisance, Litter Control, and Bush fire Prevention roles during peak times
Maintain accurate, contemporaneous records within Council databases to be used as evidence if required
Requirements:
Proven background in an investigative or compliance-based role, preferably within Local Government
Solid understanding of relevant Acts (specifically the Dog and Cat Management Act) and the ability to interpret complex technical information
Advanced verbal and written skills, with the ability to negotiate and resolve conflicts in complex situations
Skilled in Microsoft Office and maintaining detailed electronic records
While a Certificate IV in Local Government (Regulatory Services) is highly desirable, your practical experience in animal behaviour and field work is what truly counts
You must hold an unencumbered Australian driver’s licence and a current National Police Clearance
