An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join a well-established Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) in North West England. This substantive community-based post offers the chance to provide high-quality mental health care for adults with severe and enduring mental illness while working within a collaborative multidisciplinary service focused on community recovery, service development, teaching, and clinical excellence.
Job Responsibility
Provide consultant-led psychiatric care for adults aged 16–64 with severe and enduring mental health conditions within the community setting
Hold Responsible Clinician (RC) and Approved Clinician (AC) responsibilities for patients under their care
Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments and formulate treatment plans
Manage outpatient caseloads, including new assessments and follow-up reviews
Participate in Mental Health Act assessments and Community Treatment Order (CTO) reviews
Work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues to deliver coordinated care pathways
Support crisis prevention and facilitate admission avoidance where appropriate
Collaborate with Home Treatment Teams, Early Intervention Services, Liaison Psychiatry, and Inpatient Services
Contribute to Single Point of Entry (SPOE) referral discussions and multidisciplinary reviews
Attend consultant meetings, case conferences, and service development forums
Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, and risk management activities
Provide supervision and support to junior doctors and trainees
Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes
Participate in research, innovation, and service redesign initiatives
Support ongoing transformation of community mental health services and integrated care models
Requirements
MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
GMC Specialist Register status or eligibility for inclusion
Higher psychiatric training or equivalent experience
Section 12(2) Approval under the Mental Health Act 1983, or eligibility to obtain approval
Approved Clinician status or eligibility
Evidence of teaching and training abilities
Commitment to multidisciplinary working and service development
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Evidence of clinical audit participation
Ability to participate in the consultant on-call rota
Nice to have
MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
CCT in General Adult Psychiatry or within six months of completion
Additional postgraduate qualifications such as MSc, MD or MRCP
Experience of Mental Health Act detentions
Experience writing reports for Mental Health Review Tribunals
Educational Supervisor experience
Experience leading service improvement initiatives
Research publications and audit presentations
Interest in management, leadership, and service transformation
